How Much Does a Handyman Cost in Auckland?

Most homeowners search for prices before picking up the phone. The honest answer for North Shore jobs is that there is no standard hourly rate across the handyman industry — some charge by the hour, some by the job, and some work on a quote-per-job basis. Here is what shapes the cost.

What affects handyman pricing in Auckland

The type of job. Simple jobs like tightening handles, adjusting a sticking door, or assembling flat pack furniture take less time and cost less than outdoor jobs like fence repairs or deck maintenance, which involve more materials and physical labour.

How many jobs in one visit. If you have a running list of five or six small jobs, getting them done in one visit is more cost-effective than booking five separate callouts. We always encourage sending the full list upfront.

Whether a licensed tradesperson is needed. Some jobs — particularly anything involving electrical, plumbing, gasfitting, or restricted building work — can only be carried out by an appropriately licensed tradesperson under NZ law. These jobs involve different providers and different pricing. A handyman can handle a long list of residential maintenance tasks without requiring a licensed trade, but if your job falls into a regulated category, we will tell you upfront.

Materials. Minor jobs (replacing a hinge, tightening fixings, adjusting a latch) typically require minimal materials. Bigger jobs like deck board replacement or gutter repairs may involve materials quoted separately.

Typical ballpark ranges for North Shore handyman jobs

These are rough guides only — your actual quote will depend on the specifics:

  • TV wall mounting: typically 1–2 hours including cable tidy
  • Flat pack furniture assembly: varies by piece — a single wardrobe is different from a full bedroom set
  • Fence or gate repair (single gate or a few palings): typically a few hours of labour
  • Gutter clean (standard single-storey home): usually a half-day job
  • Minor indoor repairs (loose handles, door adjustments, small wall repairs): often packaged per job or per visit

Why we quote per job, not per hour

An hourly rate creates uncertainty — you do not know what you will pay until the job is done. We review the job, factor in time and materials, and give you a fixed quote before anyone shows up. If the scope changes on the day, we discuss it with you first.
